Education planning initiative for Eastern Wheatbelt South sub-region

23/01/2009

The Shire of Lake Grace has received $80,000 in State Government funding as part of the Wheatbelt Regional Development Scheme.

The funding will assist with the co-ordination of educational projects in the Eastern Wheatbelt South sub-region.

Development of a cluster model for this sub-region will allow schools to share teaching and educational resources, increase student participation and social activity and provide more opportunities at each school.

The Wheatbelt Development Commission supports the need for its community to have access to tertiary opportunities.

In collaboration with Narrogin University Access Group, the commission will investigate university opportunities for the Wheatbelt with Narrogin as a pilot site.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said these initiatives had the potential to provide the foundation needed to address current service delivery issues for the Wheatbelt and regional Western Australia.

The Federal Government’s decision to pilot a School Trade Training Centre in Merredin would provide the workforce, particularly the resources and agricultural industries, with higher qualified, skilled employees.

The commission would undertake a direct co-ordination role to strengthen the link between community and school in order to successfully deliver courses and plan for future service delivery needs.

“Merredin’s location, educational facilities and accommodation options provide the town with a comparative advantage that few Western Australian communities could successfully provide,” Mr Grylls said.
