Regional Drought Resilience Planning Program

Regional Drought Resilience Planning Program

Established under Australian Government’s $5 billion Future Drought Fund (FDF), the Regional Drought Resilience Planning (RDRP) Program is dedicated to helping regions prepare and manage the challenges of future drought risks.

Pilot Phase

In 2021-22 the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development partnered with Regional Development Commissions to pilot the program in three areas: the Northern Mid West, Inland Great Southern, and Southern Wheatbelt.

A Southern Wheatbelt Regional Drought Resilience Plan was developed through extensive stakeholder consultation and identifies five key resilience themes: community, agriculture, regional economy, water, and landscape.

Current Program

Following the success of the pilot program, an extension of the RDRP program was announced in 2023, allowing a plan to be developed for the remaining 37 LGAs in the Wheatbelt. The Wheatbelt RDRP supersedes the Southern Wheatbelt RDRP and now covers all 42 shires within the Wheatbelt Development Commission’s boundary.

During the development of the Wheatbelt RDRP, the Commission engaged with 140 people representing 102 stakeholder groups and organisations, in addition to the 330 individuals representing 150 organisations consulted during the Southern Wheatbelt RDRP development. This collaborative effort identified regional strengths, uncovered gaps, and set actionable goals to bolster regional resilience.

The Wheatbelt RDRP is intended to support funding applications from regional communities and organisations to help them prepare for and respond to drought.

The Wheatbelt RDRP has been submitted for formal approval, with the implementation phase expected to commence in 2026.

Southern Wheatbelt Drought Resilience Plan

The Southern Wheatbelt Drought Resilience Plan is one of three Pilot Plans for WA, and has emerged from extensive stakeholder engagement and technical analysis.
